RAF members to make 100-Year Commemorative Flight

Aviation has seen a lot of changes since the first US Postal airmail flight in May of 1918. But on May 13 of this year — 100 years from the first flight — an official airmail flight will take off from San Diego as three huge radial engines roar to life for the first leg of a ten-stop flight to Seattle.  One thing will remain the same: the intrepid spirit of the pilots behind the gauges.

RAF to Help Maintain Popular Backcountry Oregon Airport

The Oregon Department of Aviation (ODA) has difficulty maintaining many remote state airports.  We recreational pilots need to get involved and demonstrate to the state that these airports are important to us. In customary RAF style, that means volunteer work parties are being planned; the first being at McKenzie Bridge State Airport (00S).

Laura Haefeli in Running Hall of Fame

Out in grizzly bear country, the advice is, “Always hike with someone slower than you.”

You get the idea.

You’ll want to hike with someone other than Laura Haefeli, wife of RAF Colorado State Liaison Tom Haefeli. The couple lives in Del Norte, CO, and operates a beekeeping business.

Featured Airstrip

Each month we highlight an airstrip that the RAF has positively impacted. We hope that you will get out and enjoy these airstrips. This month's Featured Airstrip is Negrito, located in New Mexico.

The Three P's

The small cow town of Arcadia, Florida had long neglected its airport. That began to change in 2012 when a group of volunteers formed “Friends of Arcadia Airport” or FOAA. They thought a new campground might attract fly-in visitors, but they weren’t sure where to begin since the City opposed the idea. FOAA turned to the RAF. Two RAF members flew in to visit with FOAA’s Board and a plan was hatched.

March Events

We’d love for you to join us at an RAF event in March! Short descriptions of March events are below; please visit our Event Calendar for full details.

34th Annual Montana Aviation Conference, Montana

RAF’s Safety Survey Resonates with Membership

To the many of you who participated in our recent RAF Safety Survey, THANK YOU!  Over 16% of you completed the survey, a huge response rate as these things go.

We thought all RAF members would appreciate hearing some of the main takeaways from our survey as they relate to our kind of flying.  We also think you will appreciate receiving a safety checklist that in part grew out of your many member comments.  But first, the results.

Grand Gulch Gets Groomed

Fifteen aircraft arrived at Grand Gulch in northern Arizona for a cooperative work party on February 3, called by Utah Back County Pilots and the RAF.  Arizona? Yes — there’s a bit of a canyon just south of this place, which makes the destination more logical for Utah pilots, since they avoid Grand Canyon Special Airspace. Galen Hanselman devoted seven pages on its fascinating history in Fly Utah.
