June Events

June is shaping up to be very busy with fly-ins, workshops and work parties. Please plan on joining us for one or more events. Clicking on any event title will take you to the RAF events calendar page with more information.

June 2: McKenzie Bridge Airport Work Party, Oregon

The Oregon Department of Aviation (ODA) is under pressure to close and divest the State of non-revenue producing airports.  Unfortunately, this means the futures of many remote airports are threatened.  We recreational pilots need to get involved and demonstrate to the State that these airports are important to us.

To that end, the Recreational Aviation Foundation has been collaborating with ODA to hold a volunteer work party at McKenzie Bridge Airport (00S) on Saturday, June 2.  The objectives would be to demonstrate our commitment to the airfield by making it safer and more attractive for the recreational aviation community.

June 2: Aviation Seminar for All Ages, Maryland

Come to the Baltimore County Public Library Hereford Branch and learn about the physics of flight, airplanes, how to get your pilot’s license, careers in aviation and other general aviation topics. This seminar will be led by an IFR-rated pilot and Maryland state liaison for the Recreational Aviation Foundation, Craig McCullough. A Q&A session to follow.

Aviation enthusiasts of all ages welcome!

June 2: New Mexico Aviation Aerospace Association Pilot Bash 2018, New Mexico

RAF Director Emeritus Rol Murrow will be staffing a display table at the New Mexico Aviation Aerospace Association (NMAAA) Pilot Bash 2018 on June 2nd. This fun-filled event takes place from 5pm-8pm at the Bode Aviation Hangar at KAEG.

June 8-10: Murrow Field on the Divide Fly-In, New Mexico

The fly-in at Murrow Field on the Divide NM99 will take place over the weekend of June 8-9-10, with a possible rain date in late June or in July.

The main event will be the hosted breakfast event on Saturday morning. We will have coffee, tea, Danish, etc. and a large batch of hot breakfast burritos will arrive about 8:45 AM.

Otherwise folks can arrive and depart anytime from late Friday afternoon through Monday morning and camp by their planes or in the woods, or stay in one of several rooms on the adjacent Gavilan Ranch.

June 9: Ryan Field Work Party, Montana

We have a list of chores that need to be done to prepare the field for summer flying.  Fly in or drive, bring your work gloves and tools and we will provide lunch.  We will work hard but have fun as well. If you fly, be sure and request the 2018 Ryan Safety briefing.  Let us know if you think you are going to make it for the work day so we make sure to have enough food on hand.  Just send an email to info@theraf.org and let us know how many in your group.

June 15 & 16: AOPA Fly-In: Missoula

Team RAF will have an outdoor aircraft display at the AOPA Missoula, Montana Fly-In, slated for June 15 & 16! Please also note that RAF is hosting a potato bake at an AOPA fly-out on June 16 & 17 at Seeley Lake Airport. We hope you will join us for both events!

June 16 & 17: AOPA Missoula Seeley Lake Fly-Out

Join the Recreational Aviation Foundation for a fly-out to Seeley Lake (23S) for a potato bake, and if you're feeling exceptionally adventurous, camp out and stick around for the Seeley Lake Aviation Foundation pancake breakfast the next morning. For $20 per person, you'll get the traditional RAF potato bake, with all the fixin's, half a sandwich from Lindey's Prime Steak House, and water. Beer available for cash purchase.

If you plan to stick around until Sunday morning, $10 will get you pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee, and water, to help support the Seeley Lake Aviation Foundation.

June 16: Know Yourself, Know Your Plane Safety Seminar, New York

This safety seminar will take place at Boonville Inc. Airport (1NK7) in New York. The focus will be calculation of aircraft performance considering field/wx conditions, followed by flying opportunity on marked out runway.

The morning segment will be ground instruction, with all participating pilots estimating their takeoff roll, distance to clear a 50' obstacle, landing roll out and total landing distance from threshold based on their POH or equivalent and the field and weather conditions of the day.

The afternoon segment will be the actual flying.  The field will be marked out with labelled cones at 50’ intervals, and spotters will record distances for the pilots to compare to their best estimates.

June 22-24 RAF Ryan Field Weekend, Montana

This year’s RAF Ryan Field Weekend (2MT1) is scheduled for June 22-24 and will feature an “Out West” theme. This is a NO HOST FLY-IN. Driving in to the event is also an option.

We’ve contracted with popular Swan Mountain Outfitters (SMO) to provide both Friday and Saturday evening dinners, and trail rides on Saturday.

June 22-24 Creighton Island Fly-In Series, Georgia

Join in the fun for a fly-in series at Creighton Island Airfield in Georgia. This event will be held on the fourth weekend of every month, beginning in April 2018 and ending in September 2018.
